The Albanian Special Court of Appeals with judges Miliana Muca, Dhimitër Lara and Engert Pëllumbin returned today for retrial the case of abuses with public funds at the Fier incinerator, in southwestern Albania, in which former Minister of the Environment Lefter Koka is also convicted.

The decision was given more than a year after 12 defendants in the Fier incinerator corruption case were found guilty, while three others were declared innocent. Among the former officials who will be retried in the first instance is Lefter Koka, who was sentenced to ten years in prison for this affair, but after the application of the summary trial, his sentence was reduced to 6 years and eight months.

The shortened trial also benefited former secretary and former MP Alqi Bllako, who was sentenced to 2 years and eight months in prison for this case, but the SPAK special prosecution had hardened its stance by demanding his punishment for abuse of office as well, Top Channel’s Anila Hoxha reports.

It is expected that once the case reaches the first instance, a re-draw will be made and another judicial panel will be appointed for the case, which the prosecution says caused the state nearly 60 million lek ($600,000).
